GLOBAL ISSUES SERVICE SUMMIT DELEGATION & CHANGE MAKER (IN SCHOOL SERVICE):
Jan - March '16: The GISS theme for this year is FUNGUKA, and to match the theme, me and my team have decided to address the refugee crisis in Tanzania going on in Nyaragusu camp, not many people are aware of that Tanzania hosts refugees from both Burundi and Congo and there has been little media coverage on the life and sufferings of these refugees. -With the delegates we played 'guess the figure' game which they found to be a very powerful tool of learning through interaction. Solutions developed: - The shoes that grow - Liter of light (TEST TRIAL INSTALLED IN DAR SUCCESSFULLY) Collaborated & Interviewed: - DFID, UKAID's representative in Tanzania - UNHCR - Oliver, a former refugee at Nyaragusu who is now a social worker in Toronto, Canada & provided us with an insider's view to the struggles facing refugees in Nyaragusu camp. |

MTONI GISS SERVICE DAY:
14th March '16:
14th March '16:
MTONI SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL (IN-SCHOOL SERVICE):
Joined the Mtoni Take Action Tuesday group that functions in school in collaboration with The Mtoni school of mentally disabled children who visit us every Tuesday for a fun filled evening with loads of exciting activities that connect us and establish a beautiful blossoming friendship with the talented children.
Activities include: Swimming, Watching movies, Painting, Football and reading stories.
Reflection 1:
September '15:
Initiated a charades game to play with the children in the AV Theatre where every Mtoni child was paired up with an IST student and worked as a team to decode the silent actions.
It was beautiful to watch the children interact excitedly in this activity and one Mtoni chid was bubbling with enthusiasm to answer, a sweet sight that is beyond compare.
Setback:
Although the electricity then went off, which forced me to work under all the phone flashlights making the task more challenging. It was still a memorable experience.
Reflection 2:
November '15:
We also visited The Mtoni School where we spend half a day exploring their environment and then planting trees which was something totally new and exciting for me!
We learnt that since the children were incapable of reading, writing or studying the lessons we do, they were taught vocational subjects to they developed talents like cloth-dying using sisal plants and candle making.
MUSIC SESSION WITH MTONI:
May '16:
We brought in student music instructors, Mubanga Peeperkon who volunteered to teach the children drumming (attached audio recording of the synchronized drumming) & Simran who taught the children smiple piano keys.
After the session we asked the children if they liked the initiative of a music session & they gave us interesting feedback:
- They mentioned that the piano skills was hard to grasp
- The drumming & shakers was their favorite since we used African beats which were familiar to them
- The musical chairs we played made them feel active and alert as they had to respond to the sounds of Mubanga's drumming. Sometimes Mubanga played low beats & they thought he would stop so they kept their eyes out on the chairs but he would suddenly begin a higher beat, the abruptness made the activity more fun since they had to guess when he would suddenly stop the drumming. They thought this was a very active session.
GOING GREEN WITH MTONI:
April '16:
Since IST was having the Eco carnival, we decided to make Eco friendly art work.
We used bottle tops, leaves, magazine & other discarded wastes. We repainted the items and created collages with the kids.
The artwork was beautiful but with the paints around the room become too messy.
From this activity we realized that in the future we'd need to cover the tables with sheets and bring aprons for the kids as an improvement for CAS.
